Remembrance Day falls on a Sunday this year, allowing families the weekend to spend time together and commemorate the day as they see fit. November 11 holds a different meaning for everyone, whether your grandfather served, or your past three generations played a part in various military brigades. Remembrance Day is a time to stop, remember and appreciate the individuals who made this country, that we freely live in today, possible. Whether you are a ceremony person, or you prefer something a little more active, there are plenty of Remembrance Day events happening right here in Calgary.
Remembrance Day at Fort Calgary
Join Calgary at a special service facilitated by the RCMP Veterans’ Association this year. The service will include bagpipes, readings, songs and more. Following the ceremony, Fort Calgary will be holding their annual holiday market for you to wander around and gaze at the talented local makers we have right here in the city. Simply bring a non-perishable food item to attend this Fort Calgary event free of charge.
Ceremony at YYC Calgary International Airport
The airport will host a Remembrance Day ceremony for all those travelling and working at the airport on November 11 this year. Starting at 10:45 am, the ceremony will take place in the main terminal, honouring all those who served and fought for the country we have today. Plan your travel day accordingly so you can attend the service without rushing.
Free Skate & Swim
After attending one of the countless Remembrance Day ceremonies happening around the city, why not go for a swim and/or skate with the family? Several pools and arenas around the city are providing free access in honour of the day, so grab your gear and head down there to stay active!

Ceremony at Central Memorial Park
If you’re wishing to commemorate the day outside this year, attend the ceremony taking place between 12thand 13thavenue southwest. This annual ceremony takes place from 10-11: 30 am and will include the Calgary Highlanders Parade. Fingers crossed for warm weather!
Remembrance Day Parade in Banff
Take the day and head to Banff with the family. The Royal Canadian Legion #26 Colonel Moore Branch will host a parade to the commemorate the day from 10:30am-12: 30 pm. Arrive on Big Horn Street prior to the start time to reserve your front row seat!
Remembrance Day Cemetery Tour in Banff
Explore the history of war-time Banff following the parade on November 11 from 1-1: 30 pm at the Old Banff Cemetery. Listen to the stories of hardship and heroism told on this free guided tour as you wander the cemetery and imagine what life was like.
